It’s the kind of phone call no Land Rover or Range Rover owner wants to receive: the car’s broken down, it's been recovered in to us, and now you're waiting to hear what's gone wrong. This week, we had just that scenario. A Range Rover was towed into our workshop after cutting out while driving. After carrying out a full diagnostic and inspection, we discovered the root cause—excessive oil dilution had led to worn timing chains and a failed turbo.
Oil dilution happens when diesel fuel mixes with engine oil—usually due to short journeys, stop/start driving, or failed DPF regens. Over time, the oil loses its ability to protect engine components, leading to premature wear. In this case, it’s taken its toll on two of the most expensive parts to repair: the turbo and the timing chains.
This is the part where it gets real. Because the honest answer is: it depends.
✔️ - If your vehicle has a solid service history, reasonable mileage, and you’ve looked after it otherwise, then yes—this repair is an investment in a vehicle that still has a lot of life left.
❌ - If the car's been neglected, hasn’t had regular oil changes, or is starting to show signs of other major wear and tear (gearbox issues, electrical gremlins, etc.)—then we’ll tell you honestly: it might be time to walk away.
At Newbury 4x4 Centre, we’re not here to pressure anyone into spending thousands if it’s not the right call. Our job is to give you the full picture—costs, risks, future outlook—so you can make an informed decision.
