Here at Newbury 4x4 Centre, we’ve noticed a significant increase in enquiries lately regarding timing chain wear and turbo failures. Because of this, we wanted to put together a detailed knowledge hub to explain what’s really going on with the 2.0L Ingenium diesel engine, why these issues occur, and what owners can do to prevent them.
The most frequent issues we see with the 2.0 Ingenium diesel are:
These are not isolated faults — they are all linked.
The Ingenium engine uses a timing chain located at the rear of the engine (gearbox side).
This creates several challenges:
Combined with extended service intervals and modern oil specifications, this leads to premature chain stretch and failure.

If you are unfortunate enough to require a timing chain replacement or turbocharger, the quality of parts used is absolutely critical. From our experience, having used a range of aftermarket kits available on the market, the cheaper options simply do not last — often leading to repeat failures. Given that these repairs are extremely labour-intensive, this can become a very costly mistake. For this reason, we strongly recommend using genuine parts, particularly for timing chain replacements, where component quality and tolerances are crucial. While the initial cost may be higher, it offers far greater long-term reliability and helps avoid repeat repairs.
From workshop experience, earlier engines (2015–2019) show the highest failure rates.
From late 2019 onwards, JLR appear to have introduced improvements:
